Virgin Galactic Announces First Quarter 2025 Financial Results and Provides Business Update (Press Release - May 15)

Orange County, Calif. – Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the "Company”) today announced its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 and provided a business update.

First Quarter 2025 Financial Highlights

-- Cash position remains strong, with cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $567 million as of March 31, 2025.

-- Revenue of $0.5 million, compared to $2.0 million in the first quarter of 2024, with the decrease driven by the pause in commercial spaceflights to focus efforts on the production of the Delta-Class SpaceShips.

-- GAAP total operating expenses of $89 million, compared to $113 million in the first quarter of 2024. Non-GAAP total operating expenses of $80 million in the first quarter of 2025, compared to $101 million in the first quarter of 2024.

-- Net loss of $84 million, compared to a $102 million net loss in the first quarter of 2024, with the improvement primarily driven by lower operating expenses.

-- Adjusted EBITDA totaled $(72) million, compared to $(87) million in the first quarter of 2024, primarily driven by lower operating expenses.

-- Net cash used in operating activities totaled $76 million, compared to $113 million in the first quarter of 2024.

-- Cash paid for capital expenditures totaled $46 million, compared to $13 million in the first quarter of 2024.

-- Free cash flow totaled $(122) million, compared to $(126) million in the first quarter of 2024.

-- Generated $31 million in gross proceeds through the issuance of 6.9 million shares of common stock as part of the Company's at-the-market offering program.

A Random Rant About a Pop Star...

Olivia Rodrigo has a sad view about men who want to travel to space.

So anyways, I stumbled upon the tweet below where American music artist Olivia Rodrigo considered it a turn-off if men she met on a first date said that they wanted to go to space. She thinks that these guys are "a little too full" of themselves for having this ambition.

...

Um, okay. Overlooking the irony that a celebrity is accusing other folks of being too full of themselves, what kind of ridiculousness is it that a guy who wants to be an astronaut would be considered too ambitious for her?

Hypothetically speaking, if Rodrigo met Neil Armstrong on a first date—if he was obviously still alive and around her age today—she wouldn't continue going out with him because he flew to the Moon on Apollo 11, or was about to courtesy of an Artemis mission?

And let's not overlook the fact that Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and a lot of today's NASA astronauts are married with children... So traveling beyond Earth's atmosphere clearly didn't stop these explorers from having normal, earthly lives as well.

Of course, Rodrigo's response may be to billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson traveling to space via their respective companies, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. And in Elon Musk's case, he wants to spend his inherited fortune and government subsidies to build a rocket—SpaceX's Starship vehicle—that would send people to Mars.

Bezos and Musk don't help the case against Rodrigo; considering that Bezos created a multibillion-dollar online retail company that destroyed countless numbers of mom-and-pop stores and major businesses like Sears, Borders and Toys 'R' Us, while Musk spent $44 billion on buying Twitter so that he could turn it into a right-wing propaganda tool used in an attempt to get Donald Trump re-elected tomorrow.

So yea, it disappoints me greatly that Olivia Rodrigo would look down on guys who are passionate about space exploration...but uberwealthy white folks like Bezos and Musk are giving her a reason to adopt such an attitude towards men wanting to venture to the Kármán line and beyond. Very unfortunate.

Virgin Galactic Completes New Spaceship Manufacturing Facility in Arizona (News Release)

Purpose-Built Final Assembly Facility for Delta Spaceships Receives Certificate of Occupancy

Spaceship Assembly Expected to Begin in Q1 2025

Orange County, Calif. – Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the “Company”) today announced the completion of its new manufacturing facility in Phoenix, Arizona, where final assembly of its next-generation Delta spaceships is scheduled to take place starting in Q1 2025.

An initial team of Virgin Galactic technical operations and manufacturing personnel has begun preparing the facility to receive and install tooling, expected to arrive in Q4 2024. The facility will then begin to receive major subassemblies, including the wing, fuselage and feathering system next year, as the team scales to build the first two ships of the Delta fleet.

Once ground testing in Phoenix is complete, Virgin Galactic’s mothership will ferry completed spaceships to Spaceport America, New Mexico for flight tests ahead of commercial operations, which are expected to begin in 2026.

The multiuse facility includes two hangars equipped with multiple bays, designed for maximum flexibility in building and testing space vehicles. Work at the facility will be supported by the Company’s digital twin technology, which enables seamless integration between Virgin Galactic and suppliers through real-time collaboration, promoting strong governance and increased efficiency and reliability.

“The completion of our new manufacturing facility is an important milestone in the development of our fleet of next-generation spaceships, the key to our scale and profitability,” said Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier. “Tooling will begin arriving in a matter of months to support spaceship final assembly, which we expect to commence in Q1 2025.”

In May 2024, Virgin Galactic opened a ground testing facility in Southern California for Delta subsystems, including avionics, feather actuation, pneumatics and hydraulics, using an Iron Bird test rig.

Virgin Galactic’s Delta spaceships will seat up to six private passengers, and each is expected to be capable of flying up to eight missions per month, dramatically increasing access to space.

Galactic 07 Carries Five Research Payloads During Company’s Seventh Research Mission

After Today’s Final Commercial Flight of VSS Unity, Momentum Builds for Production of Delta-Class Spaceships

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the “Company”) today announced the completion of its second spaceflight of 2024 and 12 mission to date, carrying one researcher and three private astronauts. Today’s Galactic 07 flight marks the Company’s seventh research mission with Virgin Galactic’s spaceship again serving as a suborbital lab for space-based scientific research.

Onboard Galactic 07:

· Astronaut 027 – Tuva Cihangir Atasever, Turkish Space Agency (TUA) astronaut and Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) Backup Mission Specialist

· Astronaut 028 – Anand “Andy” Harish Sadhwani, California, USA

· Astronaut 029 – Irving Izchak Pergament, New York, USA

· Astronaut 030 – Giorgio Manenti, Italy

On today’s flight, Atasever flew with three human-tended experiments, including custom headgear with brain activity monitoring sensors to collect physiological data related to human spaceflight; a dosimeter; and two commercially-available insulin pens to examine the ability to administer accurate insulin doses in microgravity. He also participated in four investigations carried out by Turkish researchers on the ground to understand physiological changes during suborbital spaceflight.

Galactic 07 also flew two autonomous rack-mounted payloads supported by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program: a Purdue University experiment to study propellant slosh for spacecraft propulsion applications and a University of California, Berkeley experiment to test new 3D printing technology while in microgravity.

The flight was Virgin Galactic’s seventh spaceflight carrying microgravity and space-based research, following last year’s research missions, Galactic 05 with U.S. Planetary Scientist Dr. Alan Stern and U.S. Payload Specialist and Bioastronautics Researcher Kellie Gerardi, and Galactic 01 with the Italian Air Force and National Research Council. VSS Unity was piloted by Commander Nicola Pecile and Pilot Jameel Janjua.

VMS Eve was piloted by Commander Andy Edgell and Pilot C.J. Sturckow.

Virgin Galactic Completes 11th Successful Spaceflight (Press Release)

Virgin Galactic Completes Sixth Successful Spaceflight in Six Months (Press Release - November 2)

Flight Showcases Company’s Unique Suborbital Science-Lab Capabilities

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the “Company”) today announced the completion of its sixth space mission in six months and tenth to date. The Galactic 05 mission saw Virgin Galactic’s spaceship converted into a suborbital lab for space-based scientific research for the second time.

Dr. Alan Stern, U.S. Planetary Scientist and Associate Vice President in Southwest Research Institute’s (SwRI) Space Sector, said: “The success of this mission is another important step in the development of the scientific and educational use cases for commercial suborbital vehicles. The potential here is literally astronomical.”

Dr. Stern flew with two human-tended experiments, including a biomedical harness to collect physiological data related to human spaceflight. He also conducted practice routines and procedures in preparation for a future NASA-funded suborbital research flight.

Kellie Gerardi, U.S. Payload Specialist and Bioastronautics Researcher for the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), said: “The suborbital science potential for Institutes like ours is unprecedented and I’m also struck by the broader societal impact of commercial human spaceflight — after today’s mission, Virgin Galactic is now responsible for producing 10% of the world’s female astronauts, and I look forward to seeing that number soar for my daughter’s generation.”

Gerardi flew with three payloads, two of which evaluated novel healthcare technologies in microgravity conditions through the collection of biometric data. The third payload examined how confined fluid behaves to inform future healthcare technologies in space.

Galactic 05 was Virgin Galactic’s sixth spaceflight carrying microgravity and space-based research and its second in 2023, following Galactic 01, a research mission with the Italian Air Force and National Research Council.

VSS Unity was piloted by Commander Mike Masucci and Pilot Kelly Latimer, with Astronaut Instructor Colin Bennett on board. VMS Eve was piloted by Commander Jameel Janjua and Pilot Andy Edgell.

Altitude at Release: 44,701 feet (13,625 meters)

VSS Unity was piloted by Commander Kelly Latimer and Pilot CJ Sturckow, with Chief Astronaut Instructor Beth Moses on board. VMS Eve was piloted by Commander Nicola Pecile and Pilot Jameel Janjua.

The Company will now proceed with post-flight inspections and analysis in preparation for the next commercial space mission, Galactic 05.

Virgin Galactic Completes Fourth Successful Spaceflight in Four Months (Press Release)

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the “Company”) today announced the completion of its second private astronaut flight, Galactic 03. The mission flew three of Virgin Galactic’s first customers.

Galactic 03 was Virgin Galactic’s fourth successful spaceflight in the past four months, and the third flight of Virgin Galactic’s inaugural commercial spaceflight season. The flight followed the Company’s first research mission in June and first private astronaut mission in August.

· Astronaut 015 Timothy Nash from South Africa, and British Citizen

· Astronaut 016 Adrian Reynard from the United Kingdom

Virgin Galactic Has Officially Commenced Commercial Spaceflight Operations...

Earlier today, VSS Unity soared towards the edge of space a little over a month after the Unity 25 mission on May 25. Aboard the suborbital vehicle for this morning's inaugural commercial spaceflight, Galactic 01, were three members of the Italian Air Force: Col. Walter Villadei, Lt. Col. Angelo Landolfi and Pantaleone Carlucci.

Virgin Galactic's astronaut instructor Colin Bennett was the fourth passenger on Galactic 01.

SpaceShipTwo Update: Virgin Galactic Achieves a Major Milestone with the UNITY 25 Flight...

Earlier today, the VSS Unity soared towards the edge of space for the first time since the Unity 22 mission on July 11, 2021. Aboard the suborbital spacecraft for this morning's test flight were Virgin Galactic astronaut trainer Beth Moses (making her third flight towards the Kármán line on SpaceShipTwo, or SS2) and three fellow passengers: Jamila Gilbert, Christopher Huie and Luke Mays.

Mike Masucci and CJ Sturckow were at the controls on VSS Unity, while Jameel Janjua and Nicola Pecile piloted SS2's mothership, VMS Eve, for Unity 25.

Here are the stats from today's flight:

Take-off Time: 9:15 AM, MDT (8:15 AM, PDT)

Release Altitude: 44,500 feet (13,564 meters)

Apogee: 54.2 miles (87.2 kilometers)

Landing Time: 10:37 AM, MDT (9:37 AM, PDT)

Assuming that the results from today's rocket-powered test above New Mexico look really good, Virgin Galactic will begin commercial spaceline operations next month! The first paying passengers will fly aboard VSS Unity on the Galactic 01 research mission in late June.

Five days ago, Virgin Galactic successfully completed a glide test for VSS Unity above the New Mexico desert. This is SpaceShipTwo's first flight since she brought Sir Richard Branson and three co-passengers to the edge of space back in 2021.

The land, located in Sierra County, will be home to a new, first of its kind astronaut campus, for exclusive use by Virgin Galactic Future Astronauts and up to three of their guests in advance of a spaceflight from Spaceport America. The master plan for the campus will include training facilities, purposeful accommodations, and tailored experiences as well as an observatory, wellness center, recreation activities, and unique dining options -- all underpinned by Virgin’s signature hospitality.

Situated near Spaceport America, the campus will sit atop a mesa overlooking the stunning New Mexico landscape. With a focus on sustainability and minimal impact to the surrounding environment, the purpose-driven design of the project will embrace water conservation and re-use, eco-friendly materials, and low carbon mobility as key considerations in the development of the site. The campus is being designed with bold simplicity, function, innovation, and emotional connectivity at the core, paying homage to the region’s spectacular natural vistas.

ISS Update: SpaceX's Endeavour Capsule Has Completed Her Second Trip to the Orbital Outpost...

Crew-2 Astronauts Safely Splash Down in Gulf of Mexico (Press Release)

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 astronauts safely splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida Monday aboard the Crew Dragon Endeavour spacecraft, completing the agency’s second long-duration commercial crew mission to the International Space Station. The mission set a record for the longest spaceflight by a U.S. crewed spacecraft. The international crew of four spent 199 days in orbit, surpassing the 168 days set by NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 mission earlier this year.

NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet returned to Earth in a parachute-assisted splashdown at 10:33 p.m. EST off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. Crews aboard SpaceX recovery vessels successfully recovered the spacecraft and astronauts. After returning to shore, the astronauts will fly back to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

“We’re happy to have Shane, Megan, Aki, and Thomas safely back on Earth after another successful, record-setting long-duration mission to the International Space Station,” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson. “Congratulations to the teams at NASA and SpaceX who worked so hard to ensure their successful splashdown. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program continues to demonstrate safe, reliable transportation to conduct important science and maintenance on the space station.”

The Crew-2 mission launched April 23 on a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Crew Dragon Endeavour docked to the Harmony module’s forward port of the space station April 24, nearly 24-hours after liftoff.

Kimbrough, McArthur, Hoshide, and Pesquet traveled 84,653,119 statute miles during their mission, stayed 198 days aboard the space station, and completed 3,194 orbits around Earth.

Throughout their mission, the Crew-2 astronauts contributed to a host of science and maintenance activities, scientific investigations, and technology demonstrations. In addition, they conducted four spacewalks and multiple public engagement events while aboard the orbiting laboratory. They studied how gaseous flames behave in microgravity, grew hatch green chiles in the station’s Plant Habitat Facility, installed free-flying robotic assistants, and even donned virtual reality goggles to test new methods of exercising in space, among many other scientific activities. The astronauts took hundreds of pictures of Earth as part of the Crew Earth Observation investigation, one of the longest-running investigations aboard the space station, which contributes to tracking of natural disasters and changes to our home planet.

Kimbrough, Hoshide, and Pesquet also completed four spacewalks to install, deploy, or otherwise prepare for installation of ISS Roll-out Solar Arrays. This brought the total number of spacewalks for Kimbrough, Hoshide, and Pesquet to nine, four, and six, respectively. The fourth spacewalk, conducted by Hoshide and Pesquet on Sept. 12, was the first in the history of the space station that did not include an American or Russian.

On July 21, all four Crew-2 astronauts boarded Endeavour for a port relocation maneuver, moving their spacecraft from the forward-facing port to the space-facing port on the station’s Harmony module.

The Crew-2 flight is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which has worked with the U.S. aerospace industry to launch astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from American soil to the space station. The splashdown of Crew-2 comes just before the launch of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-3 mission, currently scheduled for no earlier than Wednesday, Nov. 10, on another long-duration mission of approximately six months.

Endeavour will return for inspection and processing to SpaceX’s Dragon Lair in Florida, where teams will examine the spacecraft’s data and performance throughout the flight.

Following Crew-3’s launch, the next NASA and SpaceX crew rotation mission is Crew-4, currently targeted for launch in April 2022. Crew-3 astronauts are scheduled to return to Earth shortly after welcoming their Crew-4 colleagues to the orbiting laboratory.

The goal of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation to and from the International Space Station. This already has provided additional research time and has increased the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s microgravity testbed for exploration, including helping NASA prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Virgin Galactic Begins Planned Vehicle Enhancement and Modification Period; Unity 23 Test Flight Rescheduled to Follow Completion of This Program (Press Release)

Virgin Galactic today announced that it will now begin its planned enhancement program for VMS Eve and VSS Unity, and will conduct the Unity 23 test flight after this work is complete.

The enhancement program is designed to improve vehicle performance and flight-rate capability for VMS Eve and VSS Unity. In preparation for this work, Virgin Galactic has been performing routine tests and analyses to update its material properties database. This data predicts how materials are expected to perform under certain load and environmental conditions and is used to inform the design and manufacturing enhancements that will support increased flight frequency. One of these recent laboratory-based tests flagged a possible reduction in the strength margins of certain materials used to modify specific joints, and this requires further physical inspection.

As is standard in aerospace test and evaluation practices, Virgin Galactic ships are designed to withstand forces that are substantially higher than those experienced in regular use, providing additional margin and layers of safety. The enhancement program is designed to further increase margins that will enable improved reliability, durability and reduced maintenance requirements when in commercial service. While this new lab test data has had no impact on the vehicles, our test flight protocols have clearly defined strength margins, and further analysis will assess whether any additional work is required to keep them at or above established levels. Given the time required for this effort, the Company has determined the most efficient and expedient path to commercial service is to complete this work now in parallel with the planned enhancement program.

Following the enhancement period, the Company intends to complete the vehicle testing program for VMS Eve and VSS Unity, including the planned research test flight with the Italian Air Force, before starting commercial flights.

This schedule update is unrelated to the Company’s recent inquiry into a potential defect in a supplier component announced on September 10, 2021, which has been successfully resolved. While the supplied component in question was not on either VMS Eve or VSS Unity, in accordance with safety protocols, Virgin Galactic completed detailed inspections and scans which found all components met quality and safety standards and were ready for flight. The enhancement period is now beginning approximately one month later than anticipated, and commercial service is now expected to commence in Q4 2022.

Virgin Galactic Cleared to Fly Following Conclusion of FAA Inquiry (Press Release)

Virgin Galactic today announced that it is cleared to fly FAA-licenced spaceflights following the conclusion of an FAA inquiry that focused on air traffic control clearance and real-time mission notification related to the Unity 22 flight in July.

The FAA today advised Virgin Galactic that the corrective actions proposed by the Company have been accepted and concluded the FAA inquiry, which began August 11, 2021. They include:

- Updated calculations to expand the protected airspace for future flights. Designating a larger area will ensure that Virgin Galactic has ample protected airspace for a variety of possible flight trajectories during spaceflight missions.

- Additional steps into the Company’s flight procedures to ensure real-time mission notifications to FAA Air Traffic Control.

Michael Colglazier, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Galactic, said: “Our entire approach to spaceflight is guided by a fundamental commitment to safety at every level, including our spaceflight system and our test flight program. Virgin Galactic Announces Second Quarter 2021 Financial Result (Press Release)

LAS CRUCES, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic” or the "Company”), a vertically integrated aerospace and space travel company, today announced its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2021.

“In the second quarter, we made meaningful progress towards commencing commercial service in 2022. We successfully completed two spaceflights from New Mexico — the latest carrying a full crew of mission specialists in the cabin and garnering an extraordinary global media and consumer response. In addition, we received FAA approval to expand our existing launch license, marking the first time the FAA has licensed a Spaceline to fly customers to space,” said Michael Colglazier, Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Galactic. “Leveraging the surge in consumer interest following the Unity 22 flight, we are excited to announce the reopening of sales effective today, beginning with our Spacefarer community. As we endeavor to bring the wonder of space to a broad global population, we are delighted to open the door to an entirely new industry and consumer experience.”

Business Highlights:

-- On July 11, 2021, successfully completed first fully-crewed spaceflight. This spaceflight marked VSS Unity’s 22nd flight and its fourth spaceflight. The flight fulfilled test objectives including evaluating the cabin and customer experience.

-- On May 22, 2021, successfully completed first spaceflight from Spaceport America, New Mexico. This spaceflight marked VSS Unity’s 21st flight and its third spaceflight. The flight fulfilled test objectives including confirming the technical readiness of the spaceship’s upgraded flight controls and horizontal stabilizers. The flight also carried revenue-generating scientific research experiments.

-- In June, the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) updated the Company's existing commercial space transportation operator license to allow the spaceline to fly customers to space. The adjustment marked the first time the FAA has licensed a spaceline to fly customers.

-- In June, we announced a new contract for a human-tended research spaceflight. The company will fly Kellie Gerardi, a researcher for the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS), on a dedicated research flight, during which Kellie will conduct experiments and test new healthcare technologies while she is in space.

-- Total retention of existing Future Astronaut reservations remained steady at approximately 600, as of June 30, 2021.

-- Announced plans to reopen sales effective today. For the private astronaut market, the Company will have three consumer offerings: i) a single seat; ii) a multi-seat couples / friends / family package; and iii) full-flight buy out. Pricing for these offers will begin at $450,000 per seat. Sales will initially open to the Company's significant list of early hand-raisers, prioritizing the Spacefarer Community, who, as promised, will be given first opportunity to reserve their place in space. A follow-on priority list will be opened to customers interested in reserving future spaceflights.

-- Announced that the next rocket-powered spaceflight, Unity 23, is targeted to occur in late-September from Spaceport America in New Mexico. This flight will be a revenue-generating flight with the Italian Air Force.

Second Quarter 2021 Financial Highlights:

-- Cash position remains strong, with cash and cash equivalents of $552 million as of June 30, 2021.

-- In July, the Company completed an “at-the-market” equity offering program (the “ATM Offering”). In connection with the ATM Offering, the Company filed a prospectus supplement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to offer and sell up to $500 million of shares of the Company’s common stock from time to time. The Company ultimately generated $500 million in gross proceeds through the sale of approximately 13.7 million shares of common stock. The Company intends to use the net proceeds generated from the ATM Offering for general corporate purposes, with a priority on expansion of its spaceship fleet.

-- GAAP selling, general, and administrative expenses of $39 million, compared to $26 million in the second quarter of 2020. Non-GAAP selling, general and administrative expenses of $26 million in the second quarter of 2021, compared to $21 million in the second quarter of 2020.

-- GAAP research and development expenses of $36 million, compared to $37 million in the second quarter of 2020. Non-GAAP research and development expenses of $31 million in the second quarter of 2020, compared to $34 million in the second quarter of 2020.

-- Adjusted EBITDA totaled $(56) million, compared to $(54) million in the second quarter of 2020.

-- Net loss of $94 million, compared to a $72 million net loss in the second quarter of 2020.

-- Cash paid for capital expenditures totaled $1 million, compared to $6 million in the second quarter of 2020.
